About the SS United States Trust

The SS United States Trust is a not for profit corporation founded in July, 2009, in response to news that the SS United States had been placed on the market for sale. It is the mission of the Trust to

  1. secure ownership of the SS United States,
  2. ensure her basic preservation and
  3. eventually oversee full time renovation efforts.

The goals of the Trust are identified under two broad categories:
Phase One / Short-Term Goals and Phase Two Long-Term Goals.

Phase One: Save the United States!

Short term goals under Phase One focus on the immediate and urgent need to buy the ship. This is necessary to prevent the likely sale to breakers who would dismantle the ship for her steel and aluminum. Phase One goals include, but are not limited to:

  • Securing one or more Media Sponsors for our initial fundraising campaign.
  • Securing one or more Product Sponsors for our initial campaign.
  • Formalizing the structure of the Endowment Fund and establishing the account.
  • Executing the initial campaign to capitalize the Endowment Fund.
  • Negotiating and executing the purchase of the ship from current owners.

Phase One requires numerous tasks be completed but only a single objective: the purchase of the SS United States.

Phase Two: Operational Oversight

Goals under Phase Two, long term objectives to be pursued once the ship has been purchased, involve using a relatively small portion of the proceeds from the Trust to mount a full-time effort for renovation and preservation. Goals include:

  • Establishing a small, full time operating group to execute the directives of the Trust and manage day to day affairs of the ship.
  • Relocating the ship to a permanent berth.
  • Operating ongoing fundraising campaigns on a "per project" basis to renovate the ship. This includes pursuing public and private grants as well as corporate and individual philanthropy and sponsorship.
  • Promoting the ship and raising funds through a "grass roots" campaign that will take the ship (figurately) into all major markets of the country.
  • Identifying the most beneficial utilization of the spaces aboard the ship and carrying out tasks necessary to realize their implementation.

It is important to note that proceeds from the Trust may not be used for renovation of the ship. So as not to deplete the endowment only expenditures deemed essential to the ship's preservation may come from Trust funds. At such time as this phase is ready to begin a secondary entity shall be established for the purpose of ongoing fundraising, repurposing and restoration.

Current Status: Phase One

At present, all effort is being dedicated to the crucial initial funding campaign and related goals under Phase One. The details of this campaign are not currently ready for public disclosure.
