July/August, 2009 - A recent legal filing by Norwegian Cruise Line and parent Star Cruises made official the transfer of ownership of the SS United States to Star Cruises. Though essentially a formality the filing was interpreted by many as sale to foreign interests. While not necessarily cause for alarm the fervor served well to remind supporters of the ship that time is of the essence.
The ship remains listed with a broker with stipulations that a sale may only be made to a U.S. entity with no intentions of dismantling the ship. Sources close to the ship have informed the Trust that there is currently no deadline in place for dropping these stipulations.
Despite those assurances rumors persist that breakers have already been allowed aboard to inspect the ship. While this could possibly be merely to ascertain the scrap value of the steel and aluminum vessel the reality remains that no business can continue to lose more than half a million dollars annually for storage, insurance and basic care in the name of "good will". |
