Bids Due for Big U

March 2010 - Genting Hong King Limited (formerly Star Cruises) made it be known at the beginning of the month that they are intent on having the ship off their books by the end of the month. A deadline of March 15th was originally set but was recently shortened to March 10th. Unlike their previous request for bids, this request was devoid of criteria that would exclude bids from scrap merchants.

There has been a flurry of behind the scenes activities by this and other organizations. In addition to this, a number of articles and news stories have appeared warning of the impending sale - and likely demise - of our nation's flagship. Every effort is being made to come up with a suitable offer to purchase the ship or at least delay the sale.

Genting is expected to announce the winning bid at month's end.

Save the Big U Campaign

January 2010 - The new year will be bringing a very exciting, and very public, new campaign to enhance our efforts to rescue the United States. The "Save the Big U" campaign will allow patriotic Americans an opportunity to easily donate to the cause and raise awareness at the same time. The first wave of public service announcements are targeted at radio stations nationwide and should begin airing near the end of the first quarter. Keep checking back for more information and subscribe to our mailing list to receive an e-mail announcing the kick-off of the campaign.

At Your Service Promotional Film

November, 2009 - Thanks to the efforts of our very own Big U Conservationist and Museum Services Director an exceptional look back in time at the United States is now available online. A rare promotional film produced by the United States Lines can be seen in its entirety by clicking here (opens in new window).

The film was likely produced around 1960 and is around 25 minutes in length.

New Artwork on Website
Thanks to the support of talented computer graphic artist Dominique Vaccaro the SSUS Trust website is now sporting a new look. A beautiful digital painting of the Big U steaming westerly for home now graces the top of most of our webpages.

Rumors of Sale Shakes Up Online Enthusiasts

July/August, 2009 - A recent legal filing by Norwegian Cruise Line and parent Star Cruises made official the transfer of ownership of the SS United States to Star Cruises. Though essentially a formality the filing was interpreted by many as sale to foreign interests. While not necessarily cause for alarm the fervor served well to remind supporters of the ship that time is of the essence.

The ship remains listed with a broker with stipulations that a sale may only be made to a U.S. entity with no intentions of dismantling the ship. Sources close to the ship have informed the Trust that there is currently no deadline in place for dropping these stipulations.

Despite those assurances rumors persist that breakers have already been allowed aboard to inspect the ship. While this could possibly be merely to ascertain the scrap value of the steel and aluminum vessel the reality remains that no business can continue to lose more than half a million dollars annually for storage, insurance and basic care in the name of "good will".
